The Database Poetry, http://www.inajar.net/poem, site started as a conversation me and Jim Kalmbach. I had expressed some concern over what to do for my final web project in class when we started talking about how I might use some of my PHP, http://www.php.net, and MySQL, http://www.mysql.com, skills to create something unique. Jim talked about an old HyperCard project he had created where users interact with a number of random lines of poetry to construct their own poems. It sounded like an interesting project, so I decided to recreate something similar on the web.
As it stands now, I would like to add some other features to the site. I think the entire experience would be much more interesting if users had the opportunity to decide on the number of lines that should make up their poem. It would also be nice if users could rearrange lines that they have saved. But since it's the end of the semester some things had to be left out. Perhaps I'll have time to return to this project after the semester is over.
For me, the greatest thing about this project was that it gave me a chance to do some more advanced programming in PHP. I've been using PHP for a couple years now, and at this point I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable with the language, thanks in large part to some of the projects I've completed this semester.
